The RBS-Hedgehog at the HZDR Ion Beam Center

Recently a unique experimental setup for Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry with highest solid angle was commissioned at the HZDR Ion Beam Center. We call it The RBS-Hedgehog. This multi-detector arrangement consists of 76 individual particle detectors arranged in 5 concentric rings covering a total solid angle of 680 msr. All detectors within one Ring exhibit the same scattering angle so their spectra can be summed up easily.

In consequence the setup delivers 5 spectra of different scattering angles (165°, 150°, 135°, 120° and 105°). The combination of different scattering angles provides additional information in RBS spectra of difficult samples as multi element thin layers with elements of similar masses or for buried layers. The setup is designed in a highly modular fashion. Each single detector is connected to a miniaturized MCA system running completely independent. This is the key point in achieving not only high solid angle but to go for highest count rates as well.

The huge solid angle of the setup allows to conduct RBS with exceptional sensitivity and/or with lowest beam doses. Furthermore it allows to acquire RBS channeling maps with superior statistics. RBS hedgehog was firstly presented to the IBA community at the 25th international conference on Ion Beam Analysis (IBA 2021).

The modular design allows to easily derive individual configurations of RBS setups. We offer all those modules and individual, custom solutions. If you are interested in getting next-level RBS setup or particular components for your lab please contact us.
